This seminar will attempt to help translators understand the problems that native English-speaking translation editors encounter in editing texts translated from Slovene to English. In my 25 years of editing experience, I have come to know, and am frustrated by, the ways in which Slovene translators into English fail to understand the challenges faced by English editors in striving to achieve the best possible translation, within the limits of the deadline and financial means.

These limits are quite relevant, on both sides of the equation, as the translator often must move on to the next translation as quickly as possible and views discussion with the editor as delaying progress towards the next project, while the editor is rarely compensated for meeting with the translator despite typically facing unanswerable dilemmas in a given translation as received. The translator works quickly and hopes that the editor will take care of things, and the editor often has no one to discuss the problems with, and so makes a comment to that effect without solving anything and/or merely glosses over the problem.

What I would like to achieve with this seminar is that translators can more easily see things from the perspective of the editor, and thus mitigate all of the above issues. I hope that a better translation, given the same constraints, can result.

I will also make the case that discourse between editor and translator is a necessary part of an ideal translation process.

I will address the typical suspects: grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation, as well as formatting, word order, and effectively citing translation sources.

Dean J. DeVos has 25 years of experience as a translation editor and teacher of English as a foreign language. He also works as a translator, lexicographer, and copywriter. In Slovenia, he has worked with most aspects of the government, most faculties, and countless businesses. Known for being cantankerous, he is not really a linguist or an expert, but with degrees in experimental psychology and philosophy and a wealth of life experience, he gets the job done. Which is the main point.

He has worked on hundreds of laws, court decisions, academic articles, and business-related texts, all well as dozens of books, both literary and academic.
