Who is the Preparation Course for the Matura exam in English intended for?
Preparation for Matura is designed for those who want to be prepared as best they can for the Matura exam in English and enrol in the faculty of their choice. It is especially recommended for those who intend to study languages.
Course description
The course is carefully planned and every year new material is prepared with consideration of Matura examination catalogues. The course is conducted by a professor with a university degree in English and experience in Matura preparation, so they are familiar with the most common mistakes that high school students make and the problems they have in Matura. The course takes place in the afternoon after school.
The course program focuses on the Matura exam as a whole, which means that it covers all four parts of the exam and tackles different types of tasks.
Course contents include:
- reading comprehension: development of reading skills, ability to look for and find information and understand texts, building vocabulary (true/false/not given exercises, ordering paragraphs correctly, short answers, essay answers);
- listening comprehension (exercises from both parts: multiple choice answers, short answers to questions asked; participants understand the gist of the message and are able to respond accordingly, they understand specific information, recognise the speaker’s circumstances and mood);
- writing essays and letters (text formation, use of relevant contents, grammar and expressions; recognising the differences between written and spoken language, between formal and informal texts; regular forms of communication – formal, informal letter, curriculum vitae, application, invitation, description, report, presentation and similar);
- oral part of the Matura exam (stress is on the topics that are most frequently discussed as part of the Matura: exchanging opinions; spontaneous reaction and participation in a conversation; summarising a text, reporting activities and events in different time periods; defending and substantiating your opinions; pronunciation and sentence stress exercises);
- consolidation and review of grammatical structures (cloze/gap fill exercises, word formation, tenses, syntax, spelling).
- Special lessons and more complex tasks and exercises will be prepared for those who are planning to take the Matura exam at the higher level. Preparations for the higher level include essay writing.
